BFG, First Game

Today Fletch and I played our first game of BFG. We were pretty much learning the basic mechanics of the game, so we didn't play with any terrain. (celestial phenomenon) We chose a generic deployment and played line em up and duke it out.
Person with the most victory points wins. (remember back in 4th ed 40k)

My Fleet was;
Battle barge
master of the fleet
terminators
3x strike cruisers
12x gladius frigates

Fletchs Fleet was;
Desolator
chaos lord
mark of tzeentch
Styx
chaos lord
mark of tzeentch
2x Murderers
2x Slaughterers
one with chaos lord, mark of slaanesh

I started out writing a battle report and keeping up with specific movements and who fired at who and the like. After about 2 or 3 turns I found out this is not like 40k at all. I found all of that to be utter garbage. The true magic of this game, in my humble opinion, is what happens. As you duke it out, this game actually has the ability to tell a story. An example of this is at one point Fletch put a cruiser in front of me and shot all his starboard weaponry at one of my strike cruisers. He crippled my engines, knocked out my forward and port guns and caught me on fire. :O Because my engines were taken out I could no longer turn. In true Marine fashion, when the chips are down go for the throat. I declared I would Ram his pathetic chaos cruiser. After looking up some rules we rolled our dice and the results were that I plowed through the side of his ship without the ability to steer and on FIRE!!! I destroyed his ship but was slowly flying straight through space and eventually the flames engulfed my strike cruiser and it exploded. I really like how it tells a story as you play. I got excited about a couple of events that happened along the coarse of play. Another such instant I was able to surround the Desolator Capital ship. I launched all my weaponry at the mammoth 12 structure point ship. I managed to score 4 wounds after going through its shields. I then launched 9 thunderhawks carrying marines to assault him. At this point I managed to destroy the prow, dorsal, starboard, and port guns. I did 4 additional structure points. Lastly I did a a teleport attack with 2 strike cruisers and used my once a game terminators and hit him hard. At this point he lost 2 more points and got -3 to leadership and caught on fire. WOOHOO! The last ship of his I killed I sent 5 thunderhawks after it to take out its last structure point. I destroyed it... But his ship went nuclear which was pretty cool in itself. Overall Marines took this one home with only 1 alpha legion ship surviving.I'm pretty stocked about this game and will post more on it as we learn the rules better and get more acquainted with BFG. I can't wait to name all my ships to give them more personality and play games with actual missions and terrain involved.

All that survived the battle

BFG Board

I wanted to make a bfg board for my fleet that would be more exciting that just playing on the kitchen table.

First I went and bought some hard board from my local hardware store it comes in 4' by 8' sheets. It cost me around $11. I then measured 4 foot and cut it in half. I used an electric powered jig saw for this. This will leave me with a 16 square foot section that I'm going to use to base my cities of death buildings on.

One side of the hard board is very slick and shiny. Paint could have trouble sticking to this. I took an electric sander and 220 sand paper and scuffed this side of the board. Be sure and take a rag or cloth and wipe off all the dust generated from sanding as this will also affect the paint.

I bought a quart of flat black paint at the store and just used a house painting roller and applied it to the surface of the board this cost me about $5.

Next I took a couple of random spray cans of paint from my cabinet. (purple, orange, yellow, red) I lightly misted these in places to represent the colors of space and gases and what not that float around.

For the stars you'll need an old tooth brush and flat white craft paint. I dip the tooth brush in the paint and then flick my finger across the loaded bristles. This creates a spray pattern. If you're unfamiliar with this technique I would recommend trying it before you use it straight on your board.

And the Finished board!

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out I started it on a whim about 8pm and about 10pm I was done with the project.

Hard Board = 11
Black Paint = 5
Spray Paints = 5
White Craft Paint = 2
Total Cost of Board = 23 bucks

With Fletch and I having just finished our first fleets I'll be sure to throw down on this table as soon as we get a chance and post a battle report.

BFG Marines Part 2

Now that I had my fleet it was time to adorn them with paint. I tried to match them to my Marine army as much as possible while keeping in mine that bfg is a much smaller scale. (the marble cracks I normally use would be too small to show) I used a lot of dry brushing Techniques and washes and even found a new product I fell in love with. Mig rust effects wash. It's a rust wash and it looks amazing. All I really lack now is bases, free hand on the battle barge and minor details. My fleet is now about 2/3 of the way complete. Enjoy!

BFG Marines Part 1

Some friends and I recently started building BFG fleets to match our armies for apocalypse tie in scenarios and just laid back gaming in general. I've learned a lot about the game in the last month or two and the 2 or 3 games I've played have been fun. BFG is generally played at 1500 points from what I've seen. So I went to make a list and get everything I needed to play.

My fleet is Space marines to match my army. I run a marble and red paint scheme with Renaissance art on the vehicles so I'm trying to match my army to that. I really like John Blanches works of art all through out the BFG rule book and cover art. My plan is to try and replicate his style on my tiny ships.

My List:
1x Battle Barge, Master of the fleet and Terminators on board
3x Strike Cruisers
4x Gladius Frigates
4x Gladius Frigates
4x Gladius Frigates

Having no experience I was shooting for a well rounded fleet using a little bit of everything. This was not too hard as there isn't a whole lot of options for a marine fleet.

I ordered everything from GW and the thing that were on back order I got from ebay. I was well on my way.
